Who are we?
GAIN is a community of investors, with charitable status, set to change the staggering lack of gender diversity in investment management, from the ground up. In the UK, women represent just 8% of decision makers in investment management. At entry level, it’s not much better - it’s understood that only 20% of applicants to the industry are women. We surveyed young women aged 16-21 and found the reasons twofold. Firstly, young women don’t understand what investing means and why it’s important to society. Secondly, there aren’t enough female role models in investing – and if you can't see her, you can't be her. These reasons shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the fact nothing has been done yet to course-correct among young women should. GAIN is here to change this. Our purpose is to inform and inspire. We inform young women with online resources, bringing helpful information on careers in investment to their fingertips. We inspire young women with a strong network of female role models, who speak in high schools and universities around the UK and feature on our online channels, delivering compelling and high-impact messages on the many benefits of investing as a career.
Gain would not be here without the help of our sponsors. Meet them here.
Tilly is the CIO-designate of the Cambridge University Endowment Fund. She is currently working as a director at Alta Advisers, a family investment office, where she manages a portfolio of investments in private equity funds. She loves unearthing new opportunities and investigating funds to identify the ones that offer a unique insight into the companies they invest in.
Tilly studied English Literature and still enjoys a good novel, along with cooking, running and exploring new places with her husband and two daughters. She dislikes not getting enough sleep and the lack of information available to young women on jobs in investing, and so GAIN was born!
Charlotte is an investment manager at Troy Asset Management, where she manages the Trojan Ethical Fund. It’s a job that takes her around the world, meeting companies and learning about new markets. Before joining the world of work she studied Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge. Charlotte loves: responsible investing, spinning, gardening and speaking French. Charlotte does not love: gender stereotyping, disregard for punctuality or mosquitos.
Caroline is a senior investment analyst at Alta Advisers, a family investment office. She loves walking to work each morning knowing that the returns they generate ultimately benefit various philanthropic efforts. Travelling the world to find new interesting opportunities is also a plus! Caroline’s Stockholm born and bred, studied Business and Economics at Stockholm School of Economics, but couldn’t resist the call of London and moved over in 2015. Bizarrely, she doesn’t love the cold (despite spending most of her childhood in the ski slopes). Find her at yoga or exploring beautiful places with her family and friends.
Anne Marie began her (nearly) 30 year career as an auditor (accountant) with Deloitte & Touche in San Francisco, California. In 1994 she moved to London for an 18 month secondment… and never left! She’s been an equity portfolio manager since 2002, most recently with a sovereign wealth fund. As someone who loves an underdog, she likes to invest in companies that are a little (or a lot) out of favour, and then waiting (impatiently) for things to improve. She’s a big champion of long-term capital stewardship creating value for a wide array of people - investing doesn’t only have to benefit a few. Before fighting for the underdog, Anne Marie studied a mix of Political Science, History, Economics, and Business in the US. Today, when she’s not travelling, she’s entertaining at home with her husband, two dogs, and as many friends as possible.
Marina recently joined the GAIN team to help with all things social media, marketing and messaging. She works in Strategic Development for WPP, an advertising, media and technology company and is learning a lot about investing from GAIN’s founding team. She studied English at Cambridge and is a big fan of all sports (but not golf), good food and reality TV. She is not a fan of slow walkers or angry cyclists.
Sophie has spent 8 years as an Executive Assistant in London, working across several industries before finally settling on investment firms, where she became Tilly Franklin's EA. This officially makes her the Queen of Getting Stuff Done. Before coming to London, Sophie read Geography at the University of Exeter. Since leaving London, she splits her time between GAIN and working in the local primary school. Sophie enjoys helping children learn to read and write and she can often be found in the kitchen baking cakes and bread and making her 'famous' blackberry jam!
