GAIN - 2020 Summer Update
To all our sponsors, volunteers and friends,
We hope you and your families are all keeping well and healthy. Despite the challenges of lockdown and moving all our events from in-person to virtual, we have made great progress this year and we wanted to give you an update on the latest developments at GAIN and our plans for the rest of 2020.
2020 – progress to date
We are absolutely delighted to let you all know that we have reached over 3200 students since we started GAIN last year, which comfortably beats our initial target of reaching 2500 students over the same period (academic year 2019-2020). Despite COVID-19 putting a pause on our events earlier in the year, we pivoted to an online format and have held 16 lockdown-inspired virtual events since April
Throughout the year, and in addition to our online event programme, we have held talks with over 26 schools as well as various events with student societies at six partner universities.
We have also partnered on events with other organisations (Speakers for Schools, Talent Tap) and also recently took part in an online careers event organised by the Girls Day School Trust (GDST) with students aged 13-18 attending.
Behind the scenes, we have been working hard to develop GAIN’s business plan, focusing on achieving our objective of raising the female application rate in the UK investment industry to 50% in ten years (vs. current average c.20%). In order to track GAIN’s impact, we are in the process of moving all our data to Salesforce, so we can more easily measure student engagement with GAIN (from school, through university and into an investment career) as well as maximise the efficiency of the GAIN team. We will be reaching out to you soon to discover more about how you want to be involved with GAIN in the future (see below for GAIN volunteer opportunities)
2020 – looking forward
We have recently launched our summer virtual programme of events following feedback from our university student network. These ten events run until the end of this month and include webinars on different asset classes as well as workshops on interview skills and investment case studies. Demand has been high, particularly for the workshops where we have had to limit numbers. We are therefore planning on running additional events in September at the start of the new term – watch this space for more volunteer speaker requests!
As a consequence of the inspiring events we have organised, student interest in an investment career is growing and GAIN want to provide our burgeoning student network with easy access to career opportunities in the industry. We will be including details of all opportunities in our upcoming student newsletter, so if your firm offers work experience, insight days, internships and/or graduate jobs, please let us know so that we can highlight these opportunities to our growing student network.
We will soon be holding our first GAIN student ambassador network event to thank the outgoing ambassadors and introduce the new ambassadors to each other, encouraging cross-university collaboration. One of our most active ambassadors, Sophie Yaxley McLellan at Cambridge University talks here about how the GAIN ambassador role has helped her achieve her career aspirations.
More volunteer opportunities
As we look forward to the next academic year, we are aiming to reach another 5000+ students by the end of the year (2021). In order to do this we need your help, in a number of ways – please get in touch if you would like to get involved with any of the following:
School outreach – we are planning for the new school year and already have a number of talks scheduled at schools next term. To help us increase our outreach, please let us know of any links you have with schools who could be interested to host an inspirational GAIN talk. A personal introduction is often the best way!
University outreach - we currently work closely with six universities (Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, KCL, UCL & Warwick) and want to expand our network to all universities in the UK. We have had interest from a number of other universities recently and are looking for university liaisons from our volunteer network to coordinate with the student ambassadors. This is typically your alma mater (although it doesn’t have to be!) and we have liaison positions to fill for the following universities: Bath, Birmingham, Exeter, Lancaster, LSE, LBS, Strathclyde. We are also keen to hear from you if you are an alumna from a different university not listed above. We will be holding our GAIN ambassador (virtual) network event soon, so this is an ideal time to get involved to meet the incoming ambassadors and plan events for the year ahead!
GAIN student ambassadors benefit from two sessions with a mentor from the GAIN network. As more students contact us from different universities to become ambassadors, we are looking for more mentors from our volunteer network to share their experience and help students navigate their way to a career in investing.
We are always looking for any interesting and inspirational content for students. We have a great news & resources section, where we include book, podcast and blog recommendations along with inspiring video content and recordings of our previous webinars. If you would like to contribute in some way, please do share your ideas with us, so we can include more content on the GAIN website and social channels.
Finally, we are delighted to welcome our newest sponsors, Bain Capital! Do let us know if your company would like to be a GAIN sponsor or supporter.
Thank you all so much for being part of the GAIN community. Your response to our volunteer requests has been amazing and heartening – thank you! We can’t wait to see you again in-person soon.
With warmest regards,
The GAIN team
