Volunteers are at the heart of GAIN’s work to change the gender balance of investment management. By sharing your experience, you help young women and non-binary students discover careers they might never have considered.
Five minutes or a few hours a month. Online or in person, anywhere in the UK.
In 2025, 200 individuals gave at least 1 hour to GAIN.
What is the GAIN Volunteer Portal?
The portal is your hub for volunteering with GAIN. Set your preferences, track the roles you’ve taken on, and get notified when something suitable comes up.
You’ll also earn digital badges as you go: Ally, Advocate and Champion, so you can share your contribution with your network.
Registering signs you up for our fortnightly volunteer newsletter too, with upcoming networking events, new opportunities, and highlights from recent sessions.

Ways to volunteer
There’s no single way to make an impact. Our volunteers support GAIN in all sorts of ways – whether it’s five minutes of your time or a few hours each month. Here are just a few examples:
Be a guest speaker on The Girls Are Investors Podcast
Share your career story, insights, and advice with thousands of students listening to learn more about the investment industry.
Mentor students on our Insight or Internship Programmes
Offer one-to-one support, answer questions, and help them prepare for the next stage of their journey.
Deliver a school talk
Inspire the next generation directly by speaking to students about your career path, challenges, and what working in investment is really like.
Make introductions
E-introduce us to your old school to arrange a talk, to your firm if you think they could support GAIN through sponsorship, or to colleagues who share our mission.
Judge student work submitted during our challenges
Help assess stock pitches and projects during our school or university investment challenges, and provide feedback that helps participants grow.
Help us create content
Create an inspiring “day in the life” blog article, or appear in video interviews for our social media channels to help students understand what investment roles look like in reality.

Join our panel of active GAIN volunteers who meet quarterly to offer industry insight and advice on our programmes, strategy & positioning.

Who can volunteer?
We welcome volunteers from all corners of the investment world – from analysts and portfolio managers to HR professionals and senior leaders.
You don’t need to have a long CV to make an impact; enthusiasm, empathy, and a desire to support others are what matter most.

No! We are always looking for new volunteers to help drive GAIN’s mission and would love to hear from you. We couldn’t do what we do without our wonderful network of volunteers.
With the exception of school talks which always require a female volunteer, men are welcome to volunteer at our events. If female-only volunteers are required, this will be specified on the event post.
In this scenario, we will always prioritise volunteers from our sponsor firms. After this, we choose based on those who most closely match the volunteer request.
Absolutely! Feel free to share the latest volunteer newsletter with them or direct them to the page to fill out our Volunteer Registration form.
We welcome volunteers at all stages in their investment career – from those in their first role in the industry through to CIOs and CEOs. We’re also keen to work with volunteers across all areas of the industry, from investment decision making to HR, Marketing, and everything in between.
For school talks, we’ll provide you with a GAIN slide deck to use on the day. For university and programme events, these are usually more specific, and we’ll provide any necessary materials ahead of time.
Yes! We hold quarterly networking drinks to facilitate meetups between volunteers and the GAIN team. Keep an eye on our newsletter and events page to find out when the next event will be and register your place.
No. We have volunteering opportunities all over the country. If you’re based in Scotland or the North of England, join our dedicated LinkedIn groups to stay in the loop about what’s happening in your region.
Yes, a lot of our volunteering opportunities take place virtually. Details on whether an event is in person or online will be included on the event post.
